Public Notice: EPA Begins Sixth Review of J&L Landfill Superfund Site
Summary
The EPA is conducting the sixth five-year review of the J&L Landfill Superfund site in Rochester Hills, Michigan. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. A summary of the cleanup activities and an evaluation of the protectiveness of the implemented cleanup remedies will be included in the five-year review report.
EPA’s cleanup plan included a multi-layer cap with protective liner, perimeter fence, and identifying signs to cover and enclose all landfill waste and the east ditch. The remedy provided monitoring for the landfill and groundwater monitoring wells. The sediment pond was also backfilled with clean fill, culverts were sealed to avoid leachate migration. EPA also expanded groundwater monitoring which included 10 monitoring well locations. A public water supply main extension and a total of five private well abandonments were completed.
This is the sixth five-year review of the J&L Landfill site. Its completion is expected by April 2026.
