Summary

The EPA is conducting the seventh five-year review of the Mason County Landfill Superfund site in Mason County, Michigan. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. A summary of the cleanup activities and an evaluation of the protectiveness of the implemented cleanup remedies will be included in the five-year review report.

Cleanup at the former landfill began in 1988 when the EPA issued a Record of Decision to select the remedies for contamination at the Site. EPA’s and Mason County’s cleanup of the closed landfill consisted of construction of a clay cap over the landfill, a fence around the site, limits on use of the area, and long-term ground water monitoring and cap maintenance. EPA continues to evaluate site documents, results of periodic inspections, and operation and maintenance sampling activities.

The five-year review at the Mason County Landfill site gives the public an opportunity to comment about site conditions or concerns.

This is the seventh five-year review of the Mason County Landfill site. Its completion is expected by December 2025.
